Senior Product Designer - Regulated Finance Products
The Company
We Build Products is a 2-year-old Berlin-based company building software for regulated financial spaces: tax automation, AML/KYC platforms, and compliance tooling. We are bootstrapped, profitable, and our flagship product (taxgermany.de) is already serving real customers.
We believe finance software does not have to be clunky. We build products that are correct, auditable, and genuinely pleasant to use.
We are a small, intentional senior team where founders, marketing, design, and engineering work side by side. We value clear thinking, ownership, and high-quality execution. You would be our primary design partner, working directly with leadership.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a senior partner to take ownership of our product experience and visual brand. This is a long-term freelance collaboration where you will be treated as a core team member, not an agency outsider.
You will fit this role if you fall into one of these two archetypes:
Type A: The Design Engineer
You bridge the gap between Figma and VS Code. You are familiar with our stack (React, TypeScript, shadcn, Tailwind) and you do not just hand off designs. You are comfortable jumping into the repo to tweak CSS, fix UI bugs, and push commits to ensure the implementation matches the vision.
Type B: The Product Strategist
A designer with strong product discovery and delivery experience, comfortable leading problem definition, user research, stakeholder communication, and translating ambiguity into clear product decisions and flows.
Note: Purely visual designers without technical literacy or product strategy experience will not be a fit. Many strong candidates will lean toward one archetype while being competent in the other.
What You Will Do
- Product Experience (75%): Design high-fidelity interfaces for complex workflows. You will think in systems, designing for error states, loading, and edge cases, not just happy paths.
- Brand & Visuals (25%): Maintain our visual identity and produce high-quality assets for sales decks, white papers, and social media.
- Data-Driven Iteration: Use usage metrics and telemetry to identify friction points and drive the next iteration.
- Copywriting: Draft first-pass copy that is clear and professional, collaborating with marketing or leadership for final refinement.
- Execution: Depending on your archetype, you will either implement UI changes directly in code or lead the problem definition and research phase.
The Mindset
- Pragmatic perfectionist: You ship 80% solutions when speed matters, but you know when the 20% matters (audit trails, clarity, brand trust).
- Evidence over opinion: You value telemetry over intuition. You want to know if a feature is actually being used, not just if stakeholders like it.
- Multiplier: You use modern tools (AI, design systems, code) to move faster, not as a crutch, but as a lever.
Why This Might Be Right For You
- Ownership, not task execution: You will own product outcomes, not just tickets. Your design judgment shapes the product roadmap.
- Real products, real users: Not a concept project. Live customers, real regulatory requirements, actual impact.
- Multiplier environment: The team is here to make you more effective, not micromanage. We give context and constraints. You decide how to build.
Requirements
- Experience: Senior-level portfolio showing shipped products in complex or regulated domains.
- Technical Literacy: You understand how products are built and the constraints of modern frontend stacks (React, Tailwind).
- Data Fluency: Comfortable working with product analytics and telemetry (e.g. PostHog, Mixpanel).
- Communication: Excellent English. You communicate design decisions clearly.
- Availability: German time zone (within 2 hours). Reliable availability for syncs and feedback loops.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience in FinTech or regulated industries.
- Ability to write production-ready CSS/React (if applying as the Design Engineer archetype).
- German language skills (helpful for understanding local tax contexts, but not required).
The Offer
- Compensation: Competitive hourly rate or monthly retainer.
- Structure: Long-term freelance collaboration (10-20 hours/week).
- Impact: Your work is used daily by financial professionals and end-users in critical workflows.
